5 Of The Best MPH Programs
A Masters in Public Health is an option for a range of different students including those from a medical, research or health management background.
Some Schools of Public Health offer programs that are five years in length, which include a year long masters course.
Here are five of the best MPH programs* that can be completed within one year in the UK.
MSc in Population Health – University College London
The aim of the course at UCL is to teach students how to define and measure public health. Modules include subjects such as Health Systems in a Global Context, which explores the way health policy affects health systems and the supply of health care. Other modules study Epidemiology and the use and gathering of statistics. Students can study this course in one year full time or up to five years on a part-time flexible basis.
Masters in Public Health – Imperial College London
There are two specialities to choose between at Imperial College London for this one-year full-time course of either Health Services and Systems or Global Health. Both sets of students can also take modules on the MSc in International Health Management that is offered at the Imperial College Business School, giving an alternative approach to Public Health. There are also opportunities for students to work with the WHO Collaborating Centre for Public Health Education and Training in different international health organisations and agencies in Geneva. Students get further work experience with local NHS Trusts in London, and have the chance to participate in summer research projects with a variety of NHS organisations.
Masters in Public Health – King’s College London
This course at King’s College London can be completed either on a full-time basis in one year or on a flexible basis over two years. Compared to the other MPH programs it has a flexible approach that allows students to tailor their studies to their future career plans. The focus is on the prevention and management of Public Health in the UK and King's College London offers the course completely online as well.
Masters in Public Health – University of Edinburgh
The University of Edinburgh offers its MPH in both an on-campus and online formats, allowing health care professionals to undertake single modules for Personal and Professional Development or for students to complete an entire Masters or Postgraduate Certificate. Both formats are research and evidence-based and modules include Health Promotion, Epidemiology, Statistics, and Public Health Ethics.
MPhil in Public Health – University of Cambridge
The MPhil in Public Health at the University of Cambridge is a small course with usually around 16 students and no more than 35 in any one year. Around two thirds of the modules are shared with the MPhil in Epidemiology. This full-time course is an intensive study option with the focus on taught modules rather than research, and in the first term students cover three modules which are an Introduction to Epidemiology Module, Introduction to Biostatistics Module and Data handling and appraisal. In the first term students also have to decide on their thesis topic and in the second and third terms students study Public Health Modules and Advanced Epidemiology Modules as well as working on their thesis.
