Abertay University
The University
Abertay University is based in the heart of beautiful Dundee on Scotland’s east coast. We pride ourselves on a range of postgraduate courses aimed at preparing you for the industries and jobs of the modern world.
Our postgraduate taught programmes specialise in artificial intelligence, business, cyber security, computer games, counselling and engineering. We were the first university in the world to launch computer games and ethical hacking programmes, and we are ranked top 10 in the world for postgraduate computer games programmes by the prestigious Princeton Review. The city of Dundee, thanks in part to our fantastic computer games courses, is an important hub for Scotland’s games industry, and is the birthplace of many hugely influential titles including Grand Theft Auto and Lemmings. Indeed, the creator of both games is an Abertay alumnus.
Our programmes all have strong links with industry - both local, national and international - a factor we feel is key to preparing for life after university. These links include real-world projects, work placements, mentorships and guest lectures.
Size
Abertay is quite small, with approximately 5,000 students - representing 60 countries. Our small size is our strength – agile and adaptable. It’s also what’s behind our reputation for friendliness. It’s easy to get to know people and make friends quickly and allows more time with your lecturers.
History
Abertay has existed as a university since 1994, but the campus has been an educational institution since 1888. Back then, we were known as Dundee Technical Institute but have gone through numerous name and structural changes since.
One thing has remained the same: a dedication to teaching the skills that are important industry. From teaching sailors how to read the stars at the end of the 19th century, to tackling business challenges set by multinational companies, our teaching has always been tailored to bring success and confidence in the world of work.
Research
Research at Abertay bridges conventional boundaries between disciplines. Our Graduate School is a unique postgraduate community, allowing researchers and postgraduates to work in a multi-disciplinary environment. Strategic research activity is focussed around University-wide themes – Creative Industries, Environment, Security and Society - to address local, national and international priorities and build on our existing areas of expertise. From projects developing seaweed beer to computer games used for anti-cancer drug design, the Graduate School encourages researchers across the university to collaborate for the common good.
The city
Dundee is a city making waves. A £1bn development of its waterfront has resulted in tongues wagging all over the world. Lonely Planet has listed the city one of its top ten European destinations to visit while the Wall Street Journal described it at “Scotland’s coolest city”. The centrepiece in the transformation is the stunning, Kengo Kuma-designed V&A Dundee - Scotland’s first design museum and the first V&A museum in the world to be opened outside of London.
Its people are famously friendly and boast a great sense of humour. One person in seven is a student and Dundee’s amenities reflect this, with great shopping, bars, restaurants and public spaces to suit all tastes. It is popular with creatives, collectives and digital pioneers.
Dundee’s beautiful setting, on the banks of the River Tay, results in magnificent views of the east coast of Scotland. It’s a 20-minute drive from the historic golf town of St Andrews and just over an hour from Aberdeen, Glasgow and Scotland’s capital, Edinburgh. You can also fly to London in just 90 minutes. What’s more, you’re on the doorstep of some of the country’s most spectacular scenery.
