Guide To Postgraduate Study In London
Find your PERFECT POSTGRAD PROGRAM
London – the most vibrant, cosmopolitan capital city in the world!
What’s not to like?
If you need to be told that London is the most vibrant and exciting places on earth to learn in, then perhaps postgraduate study in the UK's capital city is not for you! However if you're already fully aware of this fact then it's time to join the 8.674 million Londoners and study your postgrad program in this fantastic place. London attracts artists, musicians, scientists and the best business minds from around the world, and you could join them, bounce ideas off of them, and learn with and from them.
Superb study spots
Despite being one of the busiest and well populated cities in the world, London also has a whole host of fabulous places to study your postgrad programs. Whether you're after a library for research purposes or simply a peaceful spot to write your dissertation, London has plenty of study areas with your name on them! From the British Library, the second greatest book collection in the world and home to over 150 million items, to the Southbank Centre with its bright communal space and relaxed vibe, or even a quiet local cafe, you're guaranteed to find somewhere perfect for your postgrad studies.
Culture vulture
If it's culture you're interested in, then London is the place for you to study your postgrad program as you will have over 240 professional theatres to choose from to see a show in your spare time. There are also over 200 museums in the capital city, many of which are free to enter, including the world famous Science Museum and The British Museum, two superb places to while away the afternoon when you're taking a break from your postgraduate studies.
Ride the Tube
London benefits from a seriously comprehensive bus, rail and underground system to help you get to lectures on time and avoid that rain. In fact the Metropolitan Line, which is part of the Tube network, was the world's first ever underground railway opening in 1863.
5 reasons why you don’t (or should that be do?) want to be a student in London
12,000+ pubs and restaurants in London, so you’ll never have time to experience them all and pass your course.
121,000+ postgraduate students – you’ll have way too many friends to choose from!
5% of London's population are students which means there will be plenty of people surviving on a student budget with you, and goodness knows they will moan about it…
14.4 million West End show tickets for sale every year = far too many distractions from your course.
14% of all students are studying business – you'll be surrounded by future moneymakers – let’s hope they don’t make you feel inferior.
Accommodation options: London living is easy
When moving to London to study for the first time the top tip is to go with your institution’s provided accommodation or a reputable accommodation provider. Universities will often have their own accommodation and this can be ideal and close by to your lectures – however in many cases this is not available or particularly suitable for postgraduate students.
If you are going to opt for privately owned accommodation, it’s a great idea to check out private halls of residence of the kind provided by Fresh. This kind of accommodation is purpose built and are often very new and well maintained, even in comparison to university provided accommodation. Fresh is one of the best providers of this kind of accommodation, and they can arrange everything for your arrival, including bed linen and appliances to your room.
Living in Fresh accommodation is a great way to meet plenty of different students from all the different London-based universities in a safe and secure environment. Students from all different London universities can be housed in any of the four Fresh Student Living sites – meaning that you’ll have the chance to mix with people from other universities to your own – making for an even more diverse and exciting group of friends.
If you decide to rent a house privately, then make sure that someone checks it out before you pay for it, as you could easily get caught out in London.
Students in London – facts & figures
London attracts vast quantities of students from all four corners of the Globe! It appeals to both tundergraduates and postgraduates, and is currently home to 255,000 undergraduate students and 121,000 postgraduate students. Of this student community, 279,000 are UK residents, whilst 97,000 are international students.
What can you do in London when you’re not studying?
The question should really be what can't you do in in London when you're not studying! The problem with spare time in London is two-fold. Firstly, you have to decide what to do, as there is way too much on offer to cover in just one postgraduate year of study. Secondly is the time it takes to get around London, as although there is an efficient tube and bus network, London is on a massive scale and travelling across London can take time.
There is the amazing selection of museums and art galleries – such as the Tate Modern and the British Museum – which are often free of charge. The public parks including Hyde Park and Green Park are among the best in the world, and are free and wonderful places to spend time – especially when the first chink of sunlight comes through.
London also boasts some of the world's most famous and prestigious sporting venues. Cricket lovers can head to the Oval or Lords, tennis enthisiasts to Wimbledon, and football fans have a whole host or premier league teams to choose from.
Getting out of London for the day is also easy, with popular seaside destinations such as Brighton only an hour away by train, making a trip to the seaside an enjoyable and affordable option.
