Birkbeck, University of London
Birkbeck, part of the University of London, offers nearly 300 taught and research postgraduate programmes across arts and humanities, business and economics, law, science and social science. As an evening teaching specialist, Birkbeck offers its taught postgraduate courses between 6-9pm, with some courses available through distance learning. As with undergraduate courses, postgraduates can study full-time or part-time.
Home to 44 research and specialist institutes, Birkbeck is the sixth largest provider of taught postgrad courses for UK and EU students - some 44% of its 11,000-plus students are on postgrad programmes. Around 90% of its academics are active in research, and many are renowned in their fields.
With world-class research resources such as the British Museum and British Library right on its doorstep, Birkbeck offers postgraduates an exciting and intellectually challenging research environment.
Facilities
Birkbeck’s main campus is located in a bustling, student-centred hub in Bloomsbury, central London, that’s home to a number of other universities and colleges in the University of London, including University College London (UCL) and the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS). This campus has its own cafes, coffee shops, exhibition space (the Peltz Gallery) and an award-winning cinema with free screenings. It’s also home to the weekly Bloomsbury Farmer’s Market. The main building on Torrington Square houses the George Birkbeck bar, and Birkbeck’s richly-resourced library which spans over five floors.
As Birkbeck is part of the prestigious University of London, students also benefit from access to all University of London shared facilities. This includes a large range of libraries and study spaces, plus access to Student Central, the University of London Students’ Union, which has excellent and affordable sports, swimming, music and other social facilities, and is located right next door to Birkbeck.
Taught Courses
Many courses are offered over one or two years, allowing you to study at the pace that suits you. Classes are held between 6pm and 9pm between October and June, with full-time courses taking place over two or three evenings each week. Part-time courses take place one or two evenings each week.
Some 90% of Birkbeck academics are actively involved in research, bringing the latest ideas into their teaching. Professional research training is offered as part of many courses, while Birkbeck also hosts many seminars and conferences where postgraduates can present their work and make professional contacts.
Fees and Funding
Fees for courses vary, depending on what you study and how you chose to study it, however full information can be found on individual course descriptions.
Birkbeck is committed to providing advice and support to help you finance your postgraduate studies. The government has introduced loans for postgraduate students and, alongside these, we offer flexible payment options and a hardship fund to support students who experience a change of circumstances while studying.
