Overview
Welcome to the University of Surrey, a global community of more than 16,000 students from 140 countries.
We’re based in the popular town of Guildford, just 35 minutes from central London by train. Our beautiful, green campus is home to outstanding learning facilities in every faculty, plus a comprehensive range of student services, a wide choice of accommodation and dedicated support for international students, to help you make the most of university life.
Master’s programmes
At Surrey, we want to shape the world for the better. If you’re considering postgraduate study, it’s likely you do too.
We have three faculties within the University: Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences; Faculty of Engineering and Physical Sciences and Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences. Together, they offer over 100 postgraduate courses, all of which can be personalised to your interests and goals.
Commitment to practice-based learning
The University of Surrey stands out for its commitment to exceptional teaching and practice-based learning. We have a huge range of professional-standard facilities, such as labs, workshops and studios, where you can develop your skills and learn by doing. In addition, across the campus you’ll find amazing simulation facilities: a fully operational pilot process plant, wind tunnels, flight simulators, a courtroom and a Clinical Simulation Centre. These provide a safe, supervised environment to put your skills and knowledge to the test.
You’ll learn from academics who are experts in their field and continuously contributing to modern day research. You’ll be learning about current topics which will prepare you for your future career.
Our goal is to provide a challenging and rewarding university experience that creates incredible memories and helps you achieve your ambitions, while building friendships and connections that will last a lifetime.
World-leading research
Our research seeks to answer global challenges, drive innovation and deliver real-world impact. We have more than 1,300 postgraduate researchers across 100+ different research centres and groups.
Surrey is home, among other facilities, to the world’s leading innovation centre for 5G/6G research, an internationally renowned clinical trials unit, and the STAR LAB for space robotics. We also have two pan-University institutes, taking multidisciplinary approaches to major societal issues: the Institute for People-Centred AI and the Institute for Sustainability.
In the most recent Research Excellence Framework 2021, 41 per cent of our submitted research was rated as world leading.
Our rankings
Surrey is now on a great new forward momentum as our students and staff continue to excel in their work and studies. Most recently this is exemplified by our rise to 244th in QS World University Rankings 2024, the top 50 of Times Higher Education’s (THE) Impact Rankings and ranking of 13th in the Complete University Guide.
You can expect to thrive in a dynamic academic community which The Times and The Sunday Times Good University Guide 2023 recognised in their shortlisted for University of the Year. 95% of our postgraduates are in work or further study fifteen months after graduating (Graduate Outcomes Survey 2023). We’re the winner of the 2022 awards for the Best University Careers/Employability Service (National Employability Awards 2022).
Student life - a great place to live and learn
Across our lovely, leafy campus, you’ll find a fabulous choice of places to eat, drink and hang out. As well as a selection of shops and cafes, there are also facilities like The Snug, a bookable student space with huge comfy sofas, an 85” screen and a PlayStation.
There are more than 170 student societies – perfect to help you find a new hobby or pursue an existing passion with like-minded people. If you’re looking for an active lifestyle, the University of Surrey also has over 40 sports clubs to join based at the Surrey Sports Park on campus, which also hosts a 50m swimming pool and 120-station gym.
The Students’ Union also organises unforgettable events and volunteering opportunities to ensure you have the best possible university experience.
Accommodation
With so much happening on campus, it’s easy to see why so many students want to live here. There are more than 6,000 study-bedrooms on campus, with choices to suit all budgets and requirements. You’re guaranteed university accommodation in your first year as long as your application arrives on time.
Student services for international students
International students have access to support from the University of Surrey from the moment they decide to apply until after they graduate. This includes:
- Online student portal – MySurrey allows students to access support and advice at any hour of the day. You can also see someone in person via the MySurrey Hive.
- Faith support – the university is a multi-faith and multi-cultural community, so you’ll find space and support whatever your faith.
- Study support – services here range from personal tutoring to booking study spaces, resources, and language support.
- Careers support – students can find help with jobs, work placements and more by using the resources available.
- Students’ Union – though many people know it best for its events and activities, the SU is also there to represent students and provide support with academic issues, accommodation and more.
We have a dedicated team available to help international students throughout the application process – from advising on choosing the right course to applying for a visa and preparing for your first few weeks at Surrey. They can even welcome you when you arrive at Heathrow or Gatwick Airport (both less than 45 minutes from Guildford).
