The Faculty of Engineering and Physical Sciences at the University of Southampton includes Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, Engineering, Electronics and Computer Science, Physics and Astronomy, and the Zepler Institute for Photonics and Nanoelectronics, incorporating the Optoelectronics Research Centre.

Postgraduate study
Choose from over 50 taught master’s degrees, ranging from electrochemistry to artificial intelligence, chemical engineering to audiology, and aeronautics and astronautics to optical fibre and photonic engineering. We also offer extensive opportunities for postgraduate research.

Across our Engineering and Physical Sciences departments, we are home to over 5,600 students, with around 600 taught postgraduates and 1,000 postgraduate research students.

Facilities
You’ll have a fantastic learning experience, working in world-class facilities which provide the foundations for our research, education and enterprise activities. We continuously invest in our facilities to ensure that our researchers, staff and students have access to the equipment to allow them to develop and test their pioneering ideas.
Our Zepler Institute Cleanrooms have the UK’s best photonics fabrication and nanoelectronics capabilities. We are also home to the UK’s National X-ray Crystallography Service and the R.J. Mitchell Wind Tunnel, which is used extensively by industries such as motorsport, automotive, aerospace, marine, maritime, and performance sport. Our High Voltage Laboratory is a world-class centre for research into dielectric materials, insulation systems and high voltage phenomena. The National Infrastructure Laboratory houses five new laboratories including a 30m x 15m large structures testing laboratory, and a cutting-edge geotechnical centrifuge. These are used to develop new understandings of the behaviour of large structures and structural components.
