http://www.liverpool.ac.uk/architecture/
The Liverpool School of Architecture was established in 1894 – and was the first UK university to award a RIBA-accredited degree in Architecture. Today, we are ranked 8th in the UK for Architecture (The Guardian University Guide 2024) and 5th in the sector for overall research classified as world leading (4*) or internationally excellent (3*) (REF 2021).
As one of the UK's premier centres for architectural research and education, we are proud of our long tradition and position in the world of Architecture, both nationally and internationally.
Why Liverpool?
Liverpool is world-famous for its impressive architectural heritage and award-winning contemporary architecture. The Liverpool School of Architecture remains an important part of the cultural life of the city of Liverpool and the city’s outward-looking international focus is embedded in both the University of Liverpool and the schools teaching and research agenda. Not only is the Liverpool School of Architecture well-connected with the city through its teaching and research, but it’s also located in the heart of a vibrant city-based campus where students are able to immerse themselves in an architecturally rich environment.

New Extension
We are delighted to announce - as part of our commitment to investing in our student experience – that the Liverpool School of Architecture is currently undergoing a £23m extension project. The proposed building will sit adjacent to the current School, adding an additional 2,000m², as well as a remodelling of the existing accommodation, facing Abercromby Square, and the neighbouring building, which was designed by Charles Reilly in the 1930s and revamped in the 1980s by King and McAllister.
Research Degrees
With its cutting-edge research activity and highly innovative, multi-disciplinary theoretical and applied work, the Liverpool School of Architecture provides an inspiring environment for the advanced study of Architecture. We offer MPhil and PhD programmes in Architecture, both of which can be studied part-time.
Research Excellence
The Liverpool School of Architecture is an internationally recognised centre for architectural and built environment. In the most recent Research Excellence Framework (REF 2021), we were ranked 7th in the sector for world-leading (4*) outputs. Our research spans across the Architectural Humanities, Heritage, Environment, Digital Culture, and Design Practice.
Key to our research strategy is the establishment of Research Centres and Research Clusters across our main areas of expertise and scholar work. These research units facilitate peer support, foster collaborative research, and encourage different kinds of knowledge exchange and public engagement. As well as writing journal articles and monographs our research work is shared through exhibitions, films, animations, digital media, 3D models, simulations, and design projects.
