Summary
The US is the sole superpower of our multi-polar world and a vital force in international politics. Yet its global dominance is being challenged and domestically it is riven by competition and contentious personalities and debates. This course invites you to delve into the changing place of the US in the world, explore the personalities and power behind the Oval Office, and examine the impact of the iconic civil rights movement on American politics and culture. Conduct research alongside our leading political scientists as you refine your debating skills and analyse contemporary issues. With these skills, you'll be ready to pursue a range of careers in government, foreign affairs and international organisations.
**Why study this course?**
- Keele has a longstanding reputation for high quality research in Politics and International Relations
- Opportunity to tailor your programme based on your interests and career aspirations
- High staff-to-student ratio, small-group teaching, supportive and inclusive learning environment
- Research expertise in British, European, American, Middle East and international politics, and in international relations and security studies
The MA/MRes in Politics and International Relations has a pathway structure, allowing you to gain knowledge and understanding of the key elements of the discipline and giving you the opportunity to focus on the topics, questions, and issues that interest you the most. We have pathways in US Politics, Politics, International Relations, and Global Security. Whichever pathway you choose, you will be taught by academic staff who are experts and have long-standing reputations within these areas.
The US Politics pathway enables you to analyse and understand developments and challenges in one of the most fascinating political systems in the world. The US is still widely considered the planet’s sole superpower, but it is increasingly wrestling with its changed status in a multi-polar world. Meanwhile, its domestic politics are characterised by ever-growing polarisation and division. Players in Washington DC and in statehouses vie for power in more and more forceful ways. The media reflects a coarser and more strident form of politics and the American public is increasingly split and frustrated.
Our modules focus on all of these issues and more, so that we can make sense of how the US is navigating its way in the changing international context, how social tensions have developed and what can be done to calm them, how phenomena like Donald Trump has evolved, and how extraordinary policies are created.

Summary
Despite challenges to its global dominance from China and Russia, the US is widely considered the sole superpower of our multi-polar world, a vital force in international politics and source of fascination to outside observers. On this course, one of the few postgraduate programmes in the UK focused on US politics, you can delve into the personalities and power behind the Oval Office or explore the impact of the iconic civil rights movement on American culture and politics. You’ll conduct research alongside our leading political scientists, including specialists on the US Presidency and developments in US criminal justice policy.
**Why study this course?**
- Keele was one of the first universities in the UK to offer a degree in international relations over 50 years ago and has a longstanding reputation as one of the foremost centres for political studies.
- Benefit from leading expertise across diverse subjects, from security studies and environmental protest movements, to international political economy and development, and history.
- Specialist knowledge of Britain, the European Union, Western and Central Europe, Eurasia, the Balkans, USA and Middle East, has led to staff advising governments and testifying in Parliament.
- Undertake action research with immediate impact – one recent project looked at receptiveness to Covid Vaccination, another analysed reasons for the shortage of HGV drivers in the UK.
- High staff-to-student ratio enhanced by small-group tutorials and a strong, inclusive research community with opportunities to engage with the Keele Model United Nations society.
With a GDP of $20.93 trillion and military budget of $778 billion in 2020, the United States (US) has the world’s largest economy and by far the biggest defense spend. This, coupled with its strong international and military alliances, gives the Presidency a level of political and economic influence that makes it arguably the most powerful country in the world.
Domestic political division, competition and corruption, however, has led to frustration among the American public. As rivals China and Russia make a play for power, while Washington DC and the statehouses struggle to do the same, never has there been a more exciting time to study US politics.
There is an increasing demand in government, non-profits and academia for professionals skilled in politics and international relations – two subject specialisms in which Keele has enjoyed a longstanding reputation for teaching and research excellence.
