These are very wide-ranging and include topics from World Writers and Filmmakers; to Digital Literature and Culture; Translation; Social Change; and Authorship.
You may pursue a topic based entirely within one or in several languages, but we are also interested in projects which are comparative or transcultural in the scope of European and Global Studies. It is possible to receive joint supervision by Languages and Cultures and another department in the university. Collaborations with English, History, Linguistics, Politics, Philosophy and Religion, or Sociology are quite frequent and provide for strong, interdisciplinary research.

MA (Res)
Summary
This MA programme is an excellent choice if you are keen to build on your love of languages and cultures and would enjoy the freedom to explore a research topic of your own choice. You could take inspiration from your own experiences or draw upon the breadth of expertise in the Department when selecting a topic. Previous topics range widely from an exploration of literary works centred on the German Democratic Republic, to an analysis of the role of nation and language in constructing a pan-Catalan identity.
The MA is an excellent pathway to doctoral research and facilitates the development of high-level skills in independent thinking, research, and communication, which are crucial qualities in many professions.
You will choose three taught modules from the range available in the Department of Languages and Cultures and from related departments within the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences. All modules are taught in English with tuition predominantly in small groups. Tutors will advise you as to which modules might best prepare you for your dissertation work. For your dissertation, you will have individual supervision sessions with your supervisor(s).
In addition, you will be required to attend the module, Research Skills for Modern Linguists. This module is not assessed, and it covers a range of research skills specific to Modern Languages that are designed to support you in researching and writing your dissertation.
