The breadth of the School's research expertise offers a wide range of opportunities for those wishing to embark on a programme of doctoral research in human or physical geography. Research students work under the close supervision of members of academic staff. We welcome applications from those wishing to study full or part-time. The School is part of the London Social Science ESRC Doctoral Training Centre (joint between QMUL/Goldsmiths), the London NERC Doctoral Training Partnership, the Erasmus Mundus Joint Doctoral Programme on 'Science for Management of Rivers and their Tidal Systems’, and also regularly receives AHRC Collaborative Doctoral Awards.

Entry requirements | Ideally, you should have a 1st Class degree and/or a Masters at Merit of above. If you have an Upper Second Class degree, you should be able to demonstrate a record of work at 1st Class level. Though a Masters degree is not a requirement, Funding (Research Council and College Studentships) is awarded on a competitive basis, and most applicants will have a Masters degree at Merit or Distinction (with many also holding a 1st Class degree). All our applicants are judged on the same criteria: record of academic achievement; quality of research proposal; and fit with the School’s research interests. |

Alongside the opportunity to specialise in a chosen area of human geography, you will develop social science research skills and methods appropriate for further research in this field including areas such as historical geography and urban geography.
Develop your own area of research or complete a dissertation on a subject advertised by the School
This MRes is an approved pathway for ESRC funding, enabling students to apply for ESRC 1+3 funding to cover the MRes and a PhD
A pre-doctoral training programme taught in conjunction with the London Interdisciplinary Social Science Doctoral Training Partnership (LISS DTP)
This programme can also be pursued as a stand-alone degree
Work with institutions and groups beyond the University through our close ties with museums, archives, community organisations and artists
Gain understanding of areas including human geography research, social sciences research training, historical geography of London, urban studies and cities.
