Law was a foundation discipline of the University of Aberdeen when it was established in 1495. Today the Law School is considered one of the UK’s elite training grounds for lawyers - and there’s no substitute for experience. We are ranked 5th in the UK of 105 Law Schools for Overall Student Satisfaction in the National Student Survey 2022.
We teach a broad cohort of around 1200 undergraduate, postgraduate and research students representing 40 nationalities. The University has a student population of around 14,000 and a large international community of students drawn from 130 different countries. Our staff have a broad range of research interests, reflected by our five specialist law centres; Centre for Commercial Law, Centre for Constitutional and Public International Law, Centre for Energy Law, Centre for Private International Law and Centre for Scots Law, and our Dispute Resolution Network.
The Law School has its own dedicated library housing 55,000 volumes and providing access to all the main law journals and legal databases.
Programmes
The School offers many specialist taught LLM degrees across five legal themes: Commercial & Trade Law, Energy & Natural Resources Law, International Law, Human Rights & Criminal Justice, and International Intellectual Property and Information Law. A number of our taught LLM programmes have 2 options – with Professional Skills, providing indispensable work-ready competencies or with Dissertation, providing specific research and study. We currently offer three online programmes LLM Oil and Gas Law, LLM Dispute Resolution and LLM International Trade Law. We also offer an LLM research and an Accelerated LLB for well-qualified graduates wishing to gain an additional degree in law. Our Accelerated LLB Law with English Law provides students with the necessary subjects to proceed to the next stage of academic training in all four jurisdictions of the UK.

The University of Aberdeen’s Professional Skills masters law programmes offer students a unique studying opportunity to learn practical legal and business skills instead of submitting a dissertation. The Professional Skills Masters programmes offer a practical alternative to completing a traditional dissertation for your Master’s degree, learning sought-after industry skills to help develop your professional career across three consecutive weeks in the summer months.

Location
We are situated at the heart of the historic King’s College Campus, close to the centre of Aberdeen. The city has a long history of international trade and is more recently recognised as the Energy Capital of Europe. Aberdeen has a rich local cultural heritage, and offers easy access to the beautiful and varied landscape of the North East of Scotland.
Funding
The University of Aberdeen offers the Aberdeen Global Scholarship, a £3,000 tuition fee discount open to eligible self-funded international Masters students registering for on-campus study. The Law School offers some scholarships, including LLM Merit Scholarship (details usually confirmed in Spring), CB Davidson Fund and the Vikram Reddy Memorial Scholarship.
