Summary
The MA Communication Design is a one-year full-time or two-year part-time programme focused on creative approaches to the visual communication and publishing disciplines, encompassing contemporary practices around the creation and commercial distribution of text and image content for print, spatial and digital media. The programme aims to support students in developing proficiency in their chosen pathway, through both a strategic response to project briefs as well as a capacity to realise final artefacts, whilst developing professional and critical approaches to their work. Students’ learning will be set in an explorative methodology in response to the changing nature of the disciplinary (and more broadly, the creative) industries, the changing nature of communication practices and technologies, and broader shifting cultural, economic, ecological, political, and social conditions and demands. The expected graduate profile would include critical thinkers with an industry ready portfolio and suite of skills, who are aware of the creative industry employment opportunities, both nationally and internationally.
During the student journey, students will have the benefit of being introduced to three different creative subjects under one pedagogical umbrella. As lectures, seminars, studio work and coursework all progress, students will be supported in how to select a project compatible to their career aspirations, as their interests develop.
The breadth of the topics covered ensures a grounding in Graphic Design, Illustration and Publishing, enabling students to go on to specialise during the degree. Graduates will be prepared for creative industry employment and further study.
