How to Choose Where to Study Your Postgrad Degree
With endless educational opportunities around the globe, zeroing in on the right continent can be difficult, let alone the best program!
We can't tell you where to study your postgraduate degree , but we can provide advice and guidance to help you along the way.
Self Reflection Picking the perfect destination to study your postgraduate degree is tough. Before doing anything, you'll have to start by looking inwards. Think about what you want to get out of your time at university. Are you looking for a challenging cultural experience, or is brushing shoulders with some of the greatest professors in the industry more your thing? Try to keep an open mind as you investigate the options available to you. Wherever you choose, connect with students that have studied at that institution or area of the world before. Ask them about the pros and cons.
Home or Away?
The biggest question of all when deciding where exactly to study has got to be home or away. Do you want to stick to a university within your own country, or are you looking to cross borders and explore the big wide world. Obviously there are advantages and disadvantages to both, but what it really comes down to is preference. If you feel studying abroad is the right thing for you, you'll need to consider what type of program you would like to attend. You can either attend a study abroad program run by a UK university or a private company, or you can go it alone and enrol directly with your chosen institution. Some programs will arrange everything for you, from flights to medical services, whereas direct enrolment will leave most of the initiative down to you.
Rankings and Ratings If you're after impartial advice regarding a particular university, or you are hoping to make your job easier by comparing the different options, then head on over to The Quality Assurance Agency for Higher Education . Whether you want to find out more information about a particular university or college, get guidance on standards and quality, or read reviews and reports, this should be your go to site to get up to speed on whatever you need to know.
The Complete University Guide is also a great tool to utilise, allowing you to input the criteria for your own personal requirements. To see which universities and which courses are the best check out The Times Higher Education World University Rankings . Their performance table judge world-class universities across all of their core missions - teaching, research, knowledge transfer and international outlook.
No one university or college is perfect for everyone. Different places suit different people. The most important thing to remember when choosing where to carry out your postgraduate degree, is finding somewhere that feels right for you.
