Our postgraduate research programmes
Our MPhil and PhD programmes reflect the school’s established reputation in all aspects of sustainability, urbanism, architectural history and design-led approaches. Our students work closely with leading academics related to their chosen field of study within our dynamic and supportive research culture.
Our postgraduate research community comprises around 70 research students. These students are all at different stages in their MPhil/PhD studies and are exploring a wide variety of topics and questions relating to the built environment.
Our inclusive Research and Scholarship Groups (RSGs) sustain and support our research culture and help to mentor and nurture our research students and early career researchers. Research students have access to all of our RSGs to maximise exposure to their subject area and foster collaboration with other researchers. There are six available research groups:
Available PhD and MPhil courses
A full-time PhD registration is three years (or five years part-time) and a full-time MPhil is one year (or two years part-time).
Our facilities
Our teaching is based in the Bute Building, a Grade II listed building close to the city centre of Cardiff. As part of a major investment, we have refurbished our building to incorporate a wide range of new digital and making facilities, as well as state-of-the art study spaces and studios for students and staff.
We offer dedicated desk space for every postgraduate research student in newly refurbished rooms. A new auditorium allows students to host symposia and conferences, as well as break-out and rest areas that support informal and social activities. The Bute Building is also home to our bespoke Architecture Library, robotics laboratory, media lab, Living Lab and workshop, as well as various studio, exhibition and teaching spaces.
