Postgrad Solutions UK Study Bursary Winner 2010
Shawanda Asbury, MSC Food Policy, City University London
Shawanda Asbury is at the City University London studying an MSc in Food Policy. Shawanda has come to London from South Carolina in the USA, and says of winning the £500 Postgrad Solutions Bursary,
‘Being an international student, every bit counts towards education and maintenance. It is a relief to know that I can concentrate some more time on studying and not working.’
The 25-year-old chose to come to the UK for a number of reasons. She explains, ‘I really wanted a different experience from that of my undergraduate programme. I also knew that choosing the UK would open doors for my future and also allow me to explore a country that I have heard so much about but had never been to. It is also a great place to experience cultures from around the world which is something I love.’
Shawanda chose to study at City University because of the programme on offer, and because the university’s professors who are leaders in their field. Last but not least she is delighted to be based in London. She says of City University, ‘I am pleased to study with individuals who enjoy and love what they do. Being able to encounter individuals from diverse backgrounds gives me a better understanding of my future goals and where I am headed.’
She says of your first week at university, ‘I remember sitting in my first lecture thinking "Wow! There is so much to learn in so little time." It was overwhelming but also exciting.’
Shawanda was inspired to do her MSc in Food Policy by her previous job as a chef. She says of this career, ‘It was a very interesting lifestyle and allowed me to begin a connection with major food issues in the world.’
